چکیده

We consider the problem of constructing virtual path layouts for an ATM network consisting of a complete network K n of n processors in which a certain number of links may fail. Our main goal is to construct layouts which tolerate any connguration of up to f layouts and have the least possible congestion. First, we study the minimal congestion of 1-hop f-tolerant layouts in K n. For any positive integer f we give upper and lower bounds on this minimal congestion and construct f-tolerant layouts with congestion corresponding to the upper bounds. Our results are based on a precise analysis of the diameter of the network K n F] which results from K n by deleting links from a set F of bounded size. Next we study the minimal congestion of h-hop f-tolerant layouts in K n , for larger values of the number h of hops. We give upper and lower bounds on the order of magnitude of this congestion, based on results for 1-hop layouts. Finally, we consider a random, rather than worst case, fault distribution. Links fail independently with constant probability p < 1. Our goal now is to construct layouts with low congestion that tolerate the existing faults with high probability. For any p < 1, we show such layouts in K n , with congestion O(log n).

Yard Crane Pools and Optimum Layouts for Storage Yards of Container Terminals

As more and more container terminals open up all over the world, competition for business is becoming very intense for container terminal operators. They are finding out that even to keep their existing Sea Line customers, they have to make them happy by offering higher quality service. The quality of service they can provide depends on their operating policies and the design of the terminal la...

Modeling and Analysis of Congestion in the Design of Facility Layouts

Reducing manufacturing lead times and minimizing work-in-process (WIP) inventories are the cornerstones of popular manufacturing strategies such as Lean, Quick Response, and Just-inTime Manufacturing. In this paper, we present a model that captures the relationship between facility layout and congestion-related measures of performance. We use the model to introduce a formulation of the facility...

Feedback & Pricing in ATMNetworks

Admission control and congestion control can provide traac guarantees in ATM networks. However some users may not be able to describe their traac accurately enough for the network to provide such guarantees. By sending a dynamic feedback signal about the current utilisation of network resources, the network could provide loss guarantees to users who respond appropriately, even without prior tra...

Mathematical model for dynamic cell formation in fast fashion apparel manufacturing stage

This paper presents a mathematical programming model for dynamic cell formation to minimize changeover-related costs (i.e., machine relocation costs and machine setup cost) and inter-cell material handling cost to cope with the volatile production environments in apparel manufacturing industry. The model is formulated through findings of a comprehensive literature review. Developed model is val...

Designing Manufacturing Facility Layouts to Mitigate Congestion

When workflow congestion is prevalent, minimizing total expected material handling time is more appropriate than minimizing a distanced-based objective in manufacturing facility layout design. We present a model labeled Full Assignment Problem with Congestion (FAPC), which simultaneously optimizes the layout and flow routing. FAPC is a generalization of the Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP), a...
